Health Care & Emergencies

Nassau and Grand Bahama provide modern medical care with hospitals, private clinics, and specialists comparable to those in major cities. However, in the Out Islands, healthcare access is limited to small government clinics offering only basic outpatient services. Serious medical emergencies typically require airlift evacuation to Nassau or Miami, depending on severity and insurance coverage.

In Nassau, there are two main hospitals:

  • Princess Margaret Hospital (Public): Located on Shirley Street in downtown Nassau. Serves patients covered under National Insurance.

  • Doctor’s Hospital (Private): Located on Shirley Street in downtown Nassau. Offers higher-end services and shorter wait times, with an additional outpatient and emergency facility on Blake Road in western New Providence.

In Freeport, Grand Bahama, Rand Memorial Hospital provides public healthcare services, while Eleuthera recently opened the Eleuthera Wellness Hospital—the first private hospital in the Out Islands (opened in October 2025).

Nassau hosts a wide range of qualified specialists, including cardiologists, dermatologists, gynecologists, and general practitioners. Expectant mothers report positive experiences giving birth locally, with hospitals well-equipped for maternity care.

In the Out Islands, limited healthcare means residents often rely on visiting doctors or travel for treatment. For example, Spanish Wells has a government clinic as well as regular visits from doctors, dentists, and veterinarians from Nassau.
